

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials sponsored the Transportation and Civil Engineering Design Build Challenge Drawbridge Competition in Phoenix, Arizona May 3rd-6th. Due to the success of Tupelo Middle School's team in last year's competition, placing 2nd in the high school competition, AASHTO developed a Middle School division in this year's competition. Three middle school teams and three high school teams were invited to participate in the competition. Two Tupelo Middle School team represented Mississippi at the competition. During the 3-day competition, each team displayed their completed project, answered questions from directors and chief engineers from each state, presented a PowerPoint presentation during the top 50 Department of Transportation Officials business meeting, and tested the strength of the bridge designs. Each phase of the competition contributed to determine the order of the awards. First place awarded to the TMS Engineers: Chris Floyd, Phalenia Bean and Jake Nance and were led by teachers Dana Boozer and Doris Kisner. Each 1st place winner received a $500.00 savings bond. Third place was awarded to the Golden Wave Builders: McKinnon Ray, Phillip Milner, and Matt Sanders and were led by teachers Renada Hughes and Teri Mattox. Each 3rd place winner received a $200.00 savings bond.
