Dear Parent/Guardian,
One of the goals of the English Department is to guide students to be creative and independent thinkers through reading, discussion, and writing. To achieve this goal, students must be willing and able readers. It is with this thought in mind that we continue the required reading at Tupelo High School for the 2007-2008 school year.
Students need to exercise their independent reading and thinking skills to prepare them for college and/or the workforce. It is also a great opportunity for students to establish a broad literary foundation, to develop cultural literacy, and to develop their reading comprehension and vocabulary skills.
While students will be reading four books during the year, they will also be asked to read two books during the summer months: one book will be a required reading, the other book will be chosen by students from a list prepared by the teachers. The required book will be tested during the first two weeks of class. The “choice” book will have an assignment that is to be completed over the course of the summer. The assignment will be given to students prior to dismissal for summer vacation.
The dates for summer reading testing are as follows:
Quiz on Required Summer Book - August 20, 2007
Test on Required Summer Book - August 24, 2007
Assignment for Choice Summer Book due on first day of class.
All quizzes will be given as minor grades; all tests will be given as major grades. Our reading assignments are chosen based on accomplishing all of the reading competencies set forth in the Mississippi Language Arts Framework.
Parents/students are responsible for purchasing their own books. A reading list has been mailed to the local bookstores, so the books may be purchased at any of these stores or ordered online at www.amazon.com. Please do not wait until the last minute to purchase these books as the bookstores do not order large quantities of the titles. Not being able to find the books will not be an excuse for not reading the books assigned.
Reading contributes to a lifelong habit of educational growth and entertainment, thus allowing students to use their imaginations to take them to worlds unknown and to give them a better understanding of themselves and the world around them.
We are looking forward to the upcoming school year, and we appreciate your concern for your child’s education.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
