On Tuesday, November 13, 2007, officials of the Tupelo Public School District were notified of two reported incidents of criminal activity that were being investigated in the area near Lawndale Elementary School. The first reported incident occurred at 10:30 AM, and the second at 11:45 AM. In accordance with the Tupelo Public School District crisis management plan, the principal of Lawndale School immediately initiated a school lockdown in order to protect the safety of students and staff. A school lockdown requires all students to remain inside the building in their classrooms, and all exterior doors are checked to insure that they are locked and secure. At 1:20 PM the Tupelo Public School District was notified by local law enforcement that the situation no longer posed a threat to the safety of students or staff at Lawndale. Students were then directed to return to their normal schedule of classes for the remainder of the day. The Tupelo Public School District maintains a safe learning environment, and school officials are very serious about our responsibility for the safety of our children.
