Overview: Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award…
On Friday, January 20th, Pierce Street Elementary teacher Jeni Chandler, Dr. Debbie Davis, and Dr. Randy McCoy attended a luncheon in Jackson sponsored by the Mississippi Department of Education. Mrs. Chandler was recognized and honored at this luncheon by the state department for her recent selection as a recipient of the prestigious Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award. Mrs. Chandler was one of only two educators from the state of Mississippi who was selected for this national honor.
Mrs. Chandler is a third-grade language arts teacher at Pierce Street Elementary School who has taught for ten years. Mrs. Chandler joins TPSD colleagues Mrs. Linda Clifton, Mr. Mac Curlee, Mrs. Brenda Johnson, and Dr. Ellen Shelton-Richey as Milken Award winners. The Milken National Educator Awards are designed to attract, retain, and motivate outstanding talent to the teaching profession.
The Tupelo Public School District is very proud of Jeni and the job that she does everyday with her students at Pierce Street Elementary School.
CONGRATULATIONS, JENI !!!
National Board Certified Teachers…
On January 10, 2007, the Tupelo Public School District announced that six TPSD teachers recently earned National Board Certification. These teachers are:
Denise Goss, Special Education teacher at Carver Elementary School
Teresa Gregory, Challenge teacher at Lawndale Elementary School
Leigh Ann Hopkins, History teacher at Tupelo Middle School
Christa King, Kindergarten teacher at Rankin Elementary School
Suzy McGrath, English teacher at Tupelo High School
Kit Stafford, Art teacher at Pierce Street and Rankin Elementary Schools
With the addition of these six teachers, the Tupelo Public School District now has
100 National Board Certified teachers. This means that 17% of all TPSD licensed teachers presently hold National Board Certification. In addition, it should also be noted that 279 or approximately 50% of all TPSD licensed teachers hold advanced (Master’s, Specialist, or Doctoral) degrees.
The Tupelo Public School District is very proud of these accomplishments by our teachers and very grateful for their continuing efforts to serve our students and to prepare themselves to be the best teachers that they can be!!!
