Reading List for Tupelo High School

Date:August 01, 2006

Dear Parent/Guardian,

One of the goals of the English Department is to guide students to be creative and independent thinkers through reading, discussion and writing. To achieve this goal, students must be willing and able readers. It is with this thought in mind that we continue the required reading at Tupelo High School for the 2006-2007 school year.

Students need to exercise their independent reading and thinking skills to prepare them for college and/or the workforce. This is also a great opportunity for students to establish a broad literary foundation, to develop cultural literacy, and to develop their reading comprehension and vocabulary skills. Although students will be tested on all the reading texts, they will be tested on the two summer reading assignments within the first two weeks of school. The dates are as follows:

All quizzes will be given as minor grades; all tests will be given as major grades. Essays and projects can be given at individual teacher discretion. No essay and/or project grade will take the place of a major test grade. Our reading assignments are chosen based on accomplishing all of the reading competencies set forth in the MISSISSIPPI LANGUAGE ARTS FRAMEWORK.

Parents/students are responsible for purchasing their own books. A reading list has been mailed to the local bookstores, so the books may be purchased at any of these stores or ordered online at www.amazon.com. Please do not wait until the last minute to purchase these books as the bookstores do not order large quantities of the titles. Not being able to find the books will not be an excuse for not reading the books assigned.

Reading contributes to a lifelong habit of educational growth and entertainment, thus allowing students to use their imaginations to take them to worlds unknown and to give them a better understanding of themselves and the world around them.

We are looking forward to the upcoming school year, and we appreciate your concern for your child’s education. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. The links for the 2006 - 2007 required reading list are provided in the table below.
