Situated near a city-owned park, Pierce Street Elementary School was built in 1967. The one-story facility serves approximately 315 students in kindergarten through third grade. Outside areas for instruction include courtyards with picnic tables, a fish pond, and two gazebos. The school is bordered by two fully equipped, fenced play areas, with gardens for butterflies, hummingbirds and native plants of Mississippi. The instructional program also includes arts-integrated thematic units which reinforce the content and skills taught in the major subject areas. Pierce Street Elementary School is accredited by the prestigious Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and Council for School Improvement and is recognized as a National Whole School Arts Integration Model School.
