Leadership Academy Underway
The Vince Lombardi sound bite, “Leaders are not born; they’re made,” is the premise behind the implementation of Lawndale’s pilot program for sixth graders, The Leadership Academy. Designed to develop and nurture leadership potential in Lawndale’s older students, the project is funded by AEE and pairs thirty Lawndale students with alumni from the CDF-sponsored Leadership Institute in an eight-session program that includes a trip to Jackson for a lunch with area legislators and introduction of the group from the floors of both House and Senate. Students meet in both small and large groups during and after school and have lunch together once a month to discuss informally what they’re learning in their leadership sessions. January sessions were conducted to identify leadership qualities and to discuss Stephen Covey’s principles of effective leadership.
