Mrs. Denise Hodge's first grade students recently completed a unit on the usage of manners not only at school, but also at sporting events, restaurants, and home. Using a napkin correctly, learning to cut meat using a knife and fork, and using the correct spoon to eat soup were just part of the table manners learned by this class. The male students learned to pull chairs out for the girls and were encouraged to practice this at home with their mothers. Being polite not only in the classroom, but also at other places and events, was a main focus of the unit. Students were encouraged to speak quietly in the classroom and to practice this whenever inside a building. The students learned that manners can and should be a daily way of life, even at football or other sporting events. To conclude their unit, students were treated to a meal at Le Restaurante de Maniers. The tables were complete with tablecloths, cloth napkins, and flower arrangements. A book, Manners, Manners, Everywhere, is also being published by the class.
