Emergent (Early) Literacy
“Emergent (Early) Literacy is the idea that children grow into reading and writing with no real beginning or ending point, that reading and writing develop concurrently and interrelatedly...” This process begins long before children enter school and continues throughout the earliest grades of formal instruction.
The Tupelo Public School District places value and emphasis on the earliest stages of literacy development by providing a high quality Pre-Kindergarten through Second Grade program and an Early Literacy Continuum which includes the five elements of the communication process: reading, writing, speaking, listening, and thinking.
